Eligibility

Visual artists working in all forms of media are eligible. The Studio Program is designed for artists with a developed studio practice, not for commercial purposes.
Applicants cannot be in a college or university degree-granting program. Artists must be citizens of the United States, or must be legal U.S residents during their tenure. Applications are judged solely on the quality of the work as presented.
Certain types of work cannot be accommodated for practical reasons, including large or heavy sculptures, some types of metal work, and work involving high noise levels or fire risk. Mediums such as papier-mâché, clay, and fiber art are acceptable.

Yes, as long as you are a legal U.S. resident during your tenure at EFA Studios, you may apply for membership. Foreign income documents are accepted.

Applicants wishing to re-apply to EFA Studios may do so only after one year has passed from his/her previous application and only if an entirely new body of work is submitted.

The online application opens on October 1, 2024. All applications must be submitted online by or on December 1, 2024.

No. There are no application fees required.

The Explanation of Work should be a brief summary, no more than 250 words, of the images or videos submitted for review. You may choose to include information on your particular artistic process and/or why you created this body of work.
This is a statement explaining the context of your practice, your inspirations, or any material or conceptual considerations that might not be evident in your images. If your artist statement covers this you may submit your standard statement.

You will be prompted by the online application form to upload required files and information before you submit your application; our online application is designed so that you cannot submit incomplete applications. If there are any issues with the files that you have submitted, you will be notified by email.

All applicants will be notified by email once their application is submitted. If something is wrong with your submission (such as corrupt files), someone will contact you via email for further assistance.

No. You may only submit an application by following the online application instructions. You may not email your application or images to EFA Studios.

EFA Studios accepts membership applications once a year. On occasion, short-term studio space or shares become available in the building that may be rented on a month-to-month basis. Please visit our opportunities page for more information.
Review Process & Notificaiton

There are five art professionals on the jury panel. Each year, we invite different jurors to review the applications.
If you have applied before, there is no issue with resubmitting past work.

All applicants will be notified by email or by mail by March 2025 of the outcome of their application. Please do not call the office for selection results.

Studio selection is first-come, first-served, but members can request a studio change at anytime, pending availability.
You will get to see the available studios during the semi-finalist interviews. During that stage, we will ask you for any specifications you may have for a studio. We cannot guarantee that you get the exact studio you want, we will try to honor specific needs.
